Aurora

Aurora is one of the largest cities in the State of Colorado, with a population of about a third of a million. Originally a frontier town with farmers and ranchers, the City of Aurora has changed drastically since it was founded in 1891.

One of the reasons that Aurora is such a large and populated city is that it is conveniently located close to several major highways (Interstate 70, Interstate 225, and E-470). It is also an area well-served by the public transportation system – both busses and the new expansion of the Light Rail system, a commuter rail line. The city is also conveniently located near Denver’s main airport – Denver International Airport, which can be quite a far drive for people living in

cities south of Denver.

The City of Aurora spends time, effort and money on many public events throghout the year. Some of the most popular include free live concerts at the city’s parks and open spaces, art festivals, and many other community-related events.

Aurora Economy

The fact that Aurora is located in close proximity to Denver International Airport is a true asset to the city. There are over 10,000 businesses in Aurora – such as Lockheed Martin and Raytheon – which provide over a hundred thousand jobs to individuals. There are several businesses and industries that are currently thriving in Aurora, some of which include high-tech and health care.

The University of Colorado Health Sciences Center recently moved its base campus from Denver to “Fitzsimmons,” which is a former military base located in Aurora. The move and a potential for future development is expected to boost Aurora’s economy higher. The median income for households in Aurora is $46,507, the median income for a family is $52,551, the median income for males is $35,963, the median income for females is $30,080, and the per capita income for Auroa is $21,095. About 6.8% of families and 8.9% of Aurora’s population are below the poverty line, including 12.0% of those under age 18 and 6.1% of those age 65 or over.

There are many neighborhoods inside of Aurora. Because the city is so large and populous, there are many types of communities including those with newly constructed homes, those that are more established with older homes, and those that are designed for older residents. With hundred of different subdivisions, there are quite a few choices.

According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Aurora is an extremely safe place to live and has ranked it as the 5th safest place to live in the United States when compared to other cities with similar populations. In addition to safety, Aurora also offers its residents 80 parks, several public golf courses, and a reservoir for boating, fishing and swimming.
