The City of Federal Heights was incorporated in 1940, when it had only 30 residents. In 1940, the quality of water and other normally-city-supported services were lacking so by incorporating, Federal Heights’ residents were able to obtain higher quality public utilities and services. By the late 1970’s, the Town of Federal Heights became an actual city and when this happened, the population began to grow rapidly. As of the mid 2000s, Federal Heights had a population of about 11,700. For a small city – covering only 1.775 square miles – Federal Heights has a diverse population. About 80% of the residents in Federal Heights are Caucasian, 45% of the adults are married, and many, many children under the age of 18 live there.
