Lakewood

Lakewood is a suburb of the City of Denver. It sits on the west side of Denver, which means it is located close to the Rocky Mountain Foothills – hence, the area has an excellent view of Colorado’s famous mountains.

The population of Lakewood makes it the third largest city in the area. Approximately 140,000 people live in Lakewood’s 44 square miles. According to the United States census, the racial makeup of Lakewood is 87.15% Caucasian, 14.54% Hispanic or Latino, 1.48% African American, 1.11% Native American, 2.72% Asian, and 0.08% Pacific Islander.

Lakewood Economy

There are several large corporations based in Lakewood. The two top employers in Lakewood are the local school district and the government. Jefferson County R-1 School District employs 11,000 people and the Denver Federal Center, which contains federal government offices, employs over 6,000 people.

The median income for a household in Lakewood is $48,109, the median income for a family is $57,171, the median income for males is $39,800, the median income for females is $31,128, and the per capita income for Lakewood residents is $25,575. About 4.8% of families and 7.1% of the population are below the poverty line, including 9.5% of those under age 18 and 4.7% of those age 65 or over.

Residents of Lakewood who send their children to public schools may choose Lakewood High School. Newsweek recently ranked this particular school as the best high school in the State of Colorado.

Lakewood offers its community 6,500 acres of city-supported open space and more than 80 miles of hiking, biking and jogging/walking trails. There are 80+ public parks in Lakewood, including the Green Mountain open space and Bear Creek Lake Park, where there is a nice playground, picnic areas, a fishing lake, horseback riding, and hiking trails.
