City Overview
Commerce City is thought of by many as a strictly industrial area north of the Denver Metro area, but it is also an up-and-coming place to live. The city was founded in 1970 and currently has about 45,000 residents and 800 businesses. It is described as a “mixed residential and industrial” community.

In addition to residential and commercial areas, Commerce City also borders the Rocky Mountain National Wildlife Refuge. The Refuge is home to hundreds of wildlife species. Within the Refuge there are places to hike, areas for catch-and-release fishing, and free wildlife viewing tours.

Commerce City also features public golf courses and recreation centers. the City is now also, the home of the MLS team the Colorado Rapids, and play their games in the worlds largest soccer complex known as Dick's Sporting Goods Park.

Commerce City Economy
Commerce City has big plans for the future. By the year 2015, the city plans to more than double in size in terms of square miles, and also add tens of thousands of new homes. It is estimated that this will impact Commerce City’s economy in a huge way.

In addition to a prominent oil refinery business in Commerce City which has the capacity of producing 90,000 barrels per day, the Commerce City has an Economic Development Team that works hard to sway potentially profitable businesses to relocate or establish roots within the city limits. The Team also works with existing businesses to make sure everything possible is done to ensure success and profitability.

The median income for a household in Commerce City is $33,680, the median income for a family is $37,279, the median income for males is $28,450, the median income for females is $22,877, and the per capita income in Commerce City is $13,445. About 15.3% of families and 19.4% of the Commerce City population are below the poverty line, including 22.5% of those under age 18 and 15.1% of those age 65 or over.
